What is it for you?

What is it that inspires you to write a post or story?

Is it a moment felt,
or a thought that overwhelms?

Leaving us no choice but to abandon everything,photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/davelewis88/4868852058/">dave lewis 88</a> via <a href="http://photopin.com">photopin</a> <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/">cc</a>
to tap on the keyboard,
or put pen to paper?

Is it words spoken by someone else,
which cannot go unanswered?

So much easier to do by writing,
than by actually answering.

Is it a sense of duty?
The promise we would stick to a schedule,
that taps away inside our heads,
and does not allow us to ignore its demands.

Is it an emotion,
which has built up inside?

Happiness, sadness, grief or celebration,
which we feel compelled to share.

Is it a compulsion?
An addiction so great,
we cannot function,
unless we have written or published.

Is it all of the above?
Every day a different calling,
which leads us to our writing.

Or is it simply the joy of writing,
as it is for me today?
A rare moment left at home alone.
Sitting in blissful silence,
looking at the promise of a blank screen,
with no particular thoughts in mind.
Just sitting down smiling foolishly,
as I abandon all cares,
and enjoy whatever it is my fingers decide to write.

  1. My focus is the prevention of abuse of children. Getting one parent to re-think spanking or getting a single mom to realize her children need their fathers in their lives is what I aim for.

  2. lovely post. For me it is usually an idea or a thought that I want to expand on. Sometimes it is just something inside of me that is just nagging and I have to get it out. So I blab about it…

    1. Great to know as it seems to be different for everyone. I was also smiling because I was on my own and all I could hear was silence! πŸ™‚

  3. Primarily to facilitate my personal evolution but also a simple need to express sometimes (although I believe that is also a part of the former)

  4. For me it’s a total outlet. A place to make fun of the things that frustrate me so they don’t seem like such a big deal. A place to let all of my crazy out, and make new friends!

    1. Ha ha. From reading your posts I think you do that very well. “Hot on the titties” is a most expressive term! As for new friends I agree, that is a great bonus. I hope your little boy is settling into his new home.

  5. For me it is a new thing – and as Cookie said a wonderful outlet. It is primarily a way for me to vent (because all momma’s need that!), socialize (because we can all use a couple more friends) share my 2 cents about being a work at home mom and balancing life and family. I am just getting started and trying to figure out a blogging schedule that works for me – but I am super excited to enter this blogging world!! πŸ˜€

  6. I know you are overwhelmed during this awards season, but I also nominated you for the Liebster award, which you may or may not already have. I love your posts, so thanks for entertaining me!

    1. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your nomination. It is such a thrill to know anyone enjoys my writing. You know my history on these is not great but I do have the best of intentions!

  7. For me it depends on the day of the week, whether the planets are aligned and if thoughts beyond feeding the troops and othet daily tasks is possible. My muse thinks it’s most amusing to abandon me when I’m alone as I am today.

  8. For me it is a compulsion, “an addiction so great, we cannot function, unless we have written.” When I get that urge, or that idea, I just have to give into it, otherwise I won’t be able to focus on anything else.
It can also be a relaxing, soothing action. I like sitting in the dark, with nothing but the light of the computer screen, by myself and just letting the many, many, many words that fill my brain to capacity out.

    1. I feel your reasons and mine are the same. Most days I must write, I cannot wait to begin. Other days I mull along and wonder what I will write, until I sit down and out it comes.

  9. Reblogged this on A Thankfully Imperfect Woman and commented:
For me,I write when I feel the inspiration whether it be something funny that’s happened, or realizing a blessing that’s been bestowed – flowers, gifts, and …, or feeling a moment of inspiration and wanting to share. I really like the way she explains it!

    1. Thank you I am delighted with the reblog. Writing unless its for commercial reasons, seems to be a very emotional activity for most of us. Great to see you stop by.

  10. When I worked outside the home, I saw little need to blog. My social life was full, my work life was busy and crazy and I interacted with my church family three times a week. But now as the caregiver of my MIL I am housebound and would go stark raving mad if I didn’t have this outlet! Thank God for social media! But, “no, I don’t do FACEBOOK”. In fact, I hate it!

    1. I am very poor at facebook too. Yes blogging is a great medium for “meeting” people. It is also great to have a thinking challenge in everyday life. I also love reading what others have taken the time to write.
