Do you believe in love at first sight?

The first time I set eyes on the man who was to become my husband, I thought to myself…….
“What an eejit”.

We were travelling by bus from Dublin to Belfast airport, to begin a two week holiday in Cyprus. I was a student nurse at the time and myself and five friends were in top form as we set off . A short while later the bus stopped unexpectedly. The doors opened and we heard a very strong Cork/Kerry accent ask “Is this bus going to Belfast?”.

Most of the passengers laughed out loud. We watched as one of the two young men got onto the bus. He was on crutches, and seemed oblivious to the other one, who was struggling with a very large suitcase. We later discovered that they were late because they had got caught up watching the All Ireland Football Final, and had lost track of the time, as well as underestimating the distance the pub was from the bus and the speed of a fella on crutches!

As it happens, in Cyprus, we were staying in the same resort as these two young men. Over the next few days we saw each other a number of times, and if truth be told, on the fourth or fifth sighting  love struck.134271077_979713d791

That was over two decades ago, and despite all that life has thrown at us, I can safely say, for myself anyway, very little has changed. Yes at times I look at him, and see the salt and pepper in his hair, which tells me he has indeed aged.  Yet mostly I see, that self same young man, with the friendly eyes, cheeky grin, and laid back approach to life, who I first saw on crutches, getting onto the bus many years ago. And I am happy to say love has endured.

However on many other occasions I look at him, just like I did that first day, and think….

“What an Eejit!”.

  1. Great post! I once told my now husband that there was only a 30% chance of us ever going out together… I would have said lower but he was paying for dinner that night 😉 14 years later… loos like they were actually good odds 😉

    1. Ha ha. I love it. A match made in heaven you just didn’t know it.
I always thought I’d be the one who was chased, and was devil may care about that other person, but in truth I shamelessly ran after him.
That still annoys me, and he loves remembering it. Very out of character for me, but at least I made the right decision.
      Sounds like he knew!

    1. I think it’s a great word. Over here it is not a really bad word, and is often used affectionately. I hope it’s the same over there.

  2. HAHAHAHAHAHA! It’s good to know some things remain the same! And yes, I believe in love at first sight. I know stories of it and it feels good to know it exists.

But other love stories feel just as good. Like this one. 🙂

    1. Good to know. I just told my husband the opening lines of this post and he was less than impressed. 🙂 I’m glad he doesn’t write because who knows what he thought of me!

  3. The first time I ever met the GG was on a rebound volleyball court. We were short on our team and as his team had the full complement (plus reserve) for their match, he subbed on our team for a while. I looked at him and thought “Nice calves” lol and couldn’t believe that I had been playing against him for months and never noticed him before this night. The next week I was invited to a party that he was at. It wasn’t until we sat in a pool in the middle of summer a week or so later (after another party – it was the Christmas season) and talked until the wee hours of the morning that I realised I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. That was nearly 20 years ago now. 🙂

    1. What a great memory. It is amazing to look back and think of all the years you have been together. I am still shaking my head at how fast it has all gone.

  4. When I reached the end I almost spit out my morning coffee out laughing – terrific.
    AnnMarie 🙂
I recently began giving art lessons to lovely children whose mom is from Ireland. The family will be visiting there this summer. They’re leaving this saturday. She has lots of extended family there – I wish I could remember what part of Ireland…her name is Colleen and the kiddies are Clíona, Liam (I forget the other little guy) hey, you never know 🙂

  5. Lol I thought my husband was annoying when I first met him and it wasn’t until years later that we got to know each other and I fell in love! Not much has changed, he’s still annoying but He’s my annoying man and I love him 🙂

  6. Oh I definitely believe in love at first sight. I met my husband at the end of January 1987 in the day room of the dorm we were living in when we were stationed in Comiso Italy. He left to go out with his friends and I went back to my room and wrote my best friend a letter telling her I just met the man I was going to marry. We started dating at the end of March and got married on June 12, 1987. We have been married 27 years now. I think I called him an eejit more than once yesterday though when he insisted on driving for 15 1/2 hours (almost 1000 miles) in one day so he wouldn’t have to spend any more money on hotels.

    1. Ha ha. I read this the other day and it gave me a good laugh. He and my other half have a lot in common!

      Lovely love story Charlene.

      1. Tric, that story is one that will be expanded and then put in my book. I am saving that one to write after I write the hard once so I have something fun to look forward to in this writing journey.
